Municipality Pastrana is located in autonomous community of
Castille-La Mancha, central
Spain. It is
part of
Guadalajara province and is situated about 40km southeast of the provincial capital -
city of Guadalajara.
Like lots of small Spanish towns, everything in
Pastrana is centered around a square, here named "La Plaza de la Hora" ("The square of the hour"). The plaza is overlooked by the Palacio Ducal, the aforementioned palace of Princess of Éboli, which was turned into her prison. From the square begin narrow, cobbled streets lined with houses, bars and shops.
There is a legend about "The square of the hour" related to the imprisonment of the one-eyed Princess of Éboli by Philip II of
Spain after a court scandal in 1573. According to it, she would be allowed to gaze out onto the square from the window of the room she was confined to for one hour a day and from this originated the name of the square.
